A straight answer from the RPS School Board in relation to the Dr. Bedden's "mutaul" release is harder to find than a fully accredited Richmond Public School. Dr. Bedden is out as Richmond's Superintendent effective June 30th. The School Board citing "Philosophical differences" has been silent on specific reasons they decided to end Dr. Bedden's contract.
Even though allowed under the law, being silent on the matter is a disheartening display from a new School Board. It sends the message that residents don't have enough stake in the outcome to deserve to know why the School Board and Superintendent are parting ways. It's enough to take the wind out of your sails after riding the excitement of the change happening in other areas of City Hall. It makes us think that no matter how much change we see, things that are "So Richmond" will always happen to bring us back to reality.
The speculation can only be worse than what actually soured the relationship between Bedden and the School Board.
- Did it have something to do with secret 8.3 million school surplus? (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
- Was it performance based? Just 3 years on the job isn't a large enough time to see results.
We will likely never know why.
We are left to charge forward as momentum to fix our schools is now focused on replacing Dr. Bedden. Once the dust settles from this, hopefully we will all still have enough fight in us to continue moving Richmond schools forward.
